Do you know which days school is closed? How about the days when kids are let our early? MoCo has posted an academic calendar that you can access (and download) here.

Speaking of calendars… The Board of Education has tentatively approved Policy IDA—School Year Calendar, which is a new policy that will guide procedures to develop, adopt and disseminate a school year calendar. Use this form to provide feedback by Oct. 9. Check out the press release for more info.

The Board of Education has asked tentatively approved revisions to Policy IKA—Grading and Reporting, which will replace two-hour semester final exams in high school courses with quarterly marking period assessments. Although our students aren’t affected now by this decision, they will someday. If you want to provide feedback, please do so by Oct. 19 using this form. Check out the press release and this Washington Post story for more info.

Montgomery County is hosting its Third Annual Friendship Picnic at Wheaton Regional Park on Sept. 20 from 1-5 p.m. The event brings together diverse communities to share their cultures, traditions and faiths. Food, beverages and entertainment for the entire family will be provided.

Wheaton Regional Park is getting an Update. You can get more information here – and it looks like we should expect an online survey and community meetings. I’ll share more information as I get it.

Weekly Scoop for Sept. 7, 2015

Hope everyone had a great first week of school and a relaxing Labor Day!

Get Involved in the PTA! We need involved parents to run the PTA and provide successful serices to our children, teachers and school. Plus, it’s fun to connect with other parents and get to know teachers in the school. Added bonus: when families are involved in their children’s learning both at home and at school, their children do better in school. The Good News is that it’s easy to volunteer on your own time. So grab a friend and contact Doug about getting involved.

Let’s Get Social! Are you on Facebook? So are we! Like our Facebook page. (Did you know that Walter Reed donated school supplies to Glen Haven? Check out the pics!) Are you on Twitter? So are we! (And so is the school!) Follow the PTA at @glenhavenpta, follow the school at @GlenHavenES and follow Dr. Ennis at @Principal_Ennis. (you can follow me @curlygh!)

After School Activities! The PTA organizes after-school activities for our students. The classes run from 4-5, with students going directly to their activity from their classroom. If your child is in Bright Eyes, they will go directly there after the class has ended. New This Year: If 5 SAS students want to participate, the program will run a bus to and from Glen Haven.

Monday: Science (hands-on science & engineering activities) – $100 (starts 10/5)
Tuesday: Karate (preK-1) – $79 (starts 9/24); Beginner Spanish (K-1) – $154 (starts 10/6)
Wednesday: Nature (K-2) – $80 (starts 10/7)
