Become a Room Parent: Room parents are any loving adult of a child at Glen Haven who want to help that child’s teacher directly. Each teacher will have different needs but common requests are to help set up for activities, read a book to the class, coordinate other parents to help with something, make copies, and other small tasks. It is a great way to give back and make a direct impact on your child’s educational experience. Sign up here.Feedback on Largest Park in Downtown Silver Spring: The county is seeking survey responses from the community about Jesup Blair Park. They hope to make significant updates to the park but need your input to make sure it is useful, fun, and accessible to all. Learn more and find a link to the survey here.Trash Pickup: The field outside Glen Haven is technically owned and maintained by the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation. However, they do not send out teams to clean up trash. If you have a few extra minutes around pickup or drop-off help the school by picking up some trash and putting it in the trash can!Student Mental Health: MCPS and the Montgomery County School Psychologists’ Association (MCSPA) will host free events the week of Oct. 30–Nov. 4 to give youth and families the opportunity to hear from mental health experts on a variety of issues. The week of events, which will be held in-person and virtually, will include speakers and workshops, culminating in a virtual resource fair and expert panel on Saturday, Nov. 4. Learn more here.Kids Day Out: Don’t forget to sign your students up for this free program held from 8:00am-4:00pm on many of the days school is closed for teacher planning such as this upcoming Monday. This is run by Montgomery County and has lots of fun activities in a safe environment so you don’t have to take off work. Learn more here.Know the Signs of Domestic Violence: During October, the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council is displaying real warning signs from victims and survivors of dometic violence in Montgomery County at Veteran’s Plaza (Silver Spring Civic Center) in Silver Spring throughout the month of October. They hope these warning signs shine a light on the prevalence of domestic violence, how to help a loved one, and free resources at the the Montgomery County Family Justice Center, and  Trauma Services. The fair will be hosted by the Gaithersburg community schools. Join us for family fun, health resources, yoga, face painting and more! The high school is located at 101 Education Blvd. in Gaithersburg.Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival: It’s back! The parade starts at 10 AM on October 14th and ends at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza. The festival area opens at 10am at the plaza with more than 40 booths of exhibits — artists displaying and selling their original work; community organizations and county agencies with art making and giveaways in their booths and FREE children’s’ art fun in the Kids’ Zone, including face painting and balloon art. There will also be food for sale, music, and yarn bomb fun. 10:00am-5:00pm Oct. 14. Learn more including how you can sign-up to be part of the parade here.Free Family Roller-skating: Enjoy a night of roller skating with family and friends. Skates will be provided. Registration required. Children under 8 must have supervision. October 13th at 6pm at the Plum Gar Community Recreation Center in Germantown.  Register on ActiveMontgomery for the “Friday Night Roll Bounce.” Nature Forward in Chevy Chase, MD is free to visit and has easy walking paths (including some that are paved) and a newly renovated play area for kids. Happy Friday Glen Haven! This issue of the Scoop is full of important information about how to volunteer, how to support your child, important dates and more! 

Thanks to everyone who came to Back to School Night and the PTA Meeting! We’re excited to share the two winning designs for Eagle Nation Spirit Wear. Stay tuned for ways you can purchase shirts and other fun items with these designs.


And if you missed our guest speaker Ms. Zakia Lindsey here is her wonderful slide explaining what a Pupil Personnel Worker does and how you can reach out to her if you want to chat or request assistance. Her email is zakia_m_lindsey@mcpsmd.org.


PTA Memberships and Donations


Volunteer Training: If you’d like to chaperone field trips, help out with the book fair, be a room parent or any other volunteer activity with the school you’ll need to complete the MCPS mandated volunteer training. It is entirely virtual and takes about an hour to complete. If you run into any issues or have difficulty accessing a laptop with reliable internet, stop by the school and they will help. Once completed, upload proof to ParentVue and you should be set for 3 years. You can find step-by-step support and links to the training here.
Share Feedback on the 2024-2025 Calendar: Should the first day of school be before Labor Day? After Labor Day? Should kids have school on December 23rd or not? When should Spring Break be?  MCPS is asking for feedback on next year’s school calendar so if you have strong feelings about any of this be sure to fill out the survey

Fun Community Activities
Slime Time: Saturday, September 16 from 11:00am-11:30am at the Noyes Library for Young Children. Join Mr. Sean in making slime that glows in the dark! All materials provided. Made possible by the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County. Learn more.
Children’s Day at Brookside Gardens: Sunday, September 17 from 11am – 2pm. Explore the science and art of gardening through child-driven art projects and engaging science activities. Participants will rotate through outdoor activity stations designed to educate and entertain. Bring your fiends, family and picnics (only allowed during this special event). Learn more. Free – no tickets required.
Jamaica Fest: Sunday, September 17 from 12pm-9pm at Veteran’s Plaza in downtown Silver Spring. Hosted by the Jamaican Embassy in DC.  A cultural celebration dedicated to showcasing the vibrant art, music, food, dance, and fashion of our island nation. The event promises an unforgettable experience with captivating performances, tantalizing culinary delights, stunning fashion displays, and rhythmic dances that will transport you straight to the heart of Jamaica. Learn more. Free but there is an optional $10 raffle for a trip to Jamaica.

2022 Back to School Scoop


Welcome back! We hope you’re as excited as we are for the start of school. Inside this newsletter you’ll find information about the start of school, a link to our new Google calendar, and some fun.

We also want to encourage you to Join the PTA. Your membership dues help support teachers, staff and students at the school. The GHES PTA is also a great way to connect with the community, learn about important issues, and advocate for your child.School Supplies: Find the list of items your little one will need for the first day of school here. Back to school night on the 26th will also have free backpacks available. The school also recommends sending your child to school with a refillable water bottle.Principal’s Welcome Back Letter: Make sure to read and save Ms. Strain’s most recent letter to parents. It includes information about drop off and pick up, lunches, policies, school lunch and more.Free and Reduced Meal Sign-ups: Funding to provide free lunch for schools is set to expire at the end of the summer. Families will need to register here to get free or reduced meals for the 2022-2023 year. Breakfasts will remain free for everyone.
Volunteer with the PTA: We need your help! We have volunteer opportunities that are both long-term and short-term. Sign up here to volunteer. Adopt-A-Teacher: A MCPS teacher created a Facebook group allowing teachers with classroom supply needs and those willing to donate a space to connect. Read about it here.School Volunteer Training: Want to volunteer in your child’s school in the upcoming school year? Make sure you take the mandatory training and are vaccinated against COVID-19. Covid Rules for 2022-2023This article covers the current rules for COVID-19 at MCPS. Student masking is optional and weekly screening tests will not continue. Close contacts will also not be required to quarantine. However, volunteers and staff still need to be vaccinated and children presenting symptoms will receive a rapid COVID-19 test.Free Tutoring: All K-12 MCPS students can now access free virtual tutoring services. Way to Go Glen Haven! With all your help (plus the help of our larger community) we were able to raise enough money to bring Reflex Math to Glen Haven.  Kudos to Ms. Caruso and Ms. Fox for spearheading this fundraiser!  I know we are all excited to see Reflex Math in action!

Clothing Drive! Clean out your closets and help support our school! (Because Reflex Math is fully funded, this $ will go to support our school!)  The PTA, Ms. Caruso and Ms Fox will be jointly hosting a fundraiser, collecting clothing and small household items for the Unique Thrift Store in Wheaton.  Bring your stuff to the school by September 12 – drop off in Ms. Fox’s room.  The Unique Thrift Store will then donate $ back to the PTA, based on the weight of the clothing and items donated!

Mabel’s Labels: Make sure your kids’ stuff makes it home by labeling everything!  Buy Mabels Labels AND Help the PTA.  Double Win!  Check it out here

Reflex Math: We are excited to support third grade teachers Ms. Caruso and Ms. Fox as they fundraise to bring Reflex Math to the school. What is Reflex Math? It’s a computer game that helps kids improve their math facts. You can help two ways – do either or both!

* Donate $ to the Cause: Head over to their Donors Choose page (it’s like GoFundMe for teachers) and make a donation.
* Donate Clothing to the Cause: Clean out your closets and help bring Reflex Math to our school at the same time! Glen Haven Scoop: Week of May 9, 2016

Thank you to our excellent Staff Appreciation Committee for all their hard work last week! I know the teachers had a great time! If you haven’t seen any of the pics – head to our Facebook page! Peace, Love, and Books! The book fair is coming back to Glen Haven and we need parent volunteers to help run the store. Here’s a link to the sign up genius.

If you haven’t heard…. AlphaBest will be taking over before and after care at Glen Haven. For more information, head here. Registration opens May 12.

At our most recent PTA meeting, we learned about a new math program called Reflex, which is supposed to increase math fact fluency. You can learn more here: https://www.reflexmath.com/ The program costs about $3,000, and the teachers have asked for our help in funding it.

Glen Haven Scoop: Week of May 1, 2016

A BIG HUGE thank you to everyone who donated time and backed goods for our first Bake Sale last Tuesday. We raised $1,000 for our school! Very exciting news. Keep an eye out for next year – we will definitely be taking advantage of hungry voters in the Fall!

It’s TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK! Let’s show our teachers that we appreciate them. (Please note students are not required to bring gifts)

We need volunteers to bake great treats for us to sell, and we need folks who can man the table (kids welcome/encouraged to join!) For those who volunteer to donate goodies, please place them in individual wrapping or baggies and please do not send in dishes that need to be returned. Are you collecting Box Tops? Do you know what a box top is? Glen Haven participates in Box Tops for Education – a program that provides the PTA with $ for each box top collected. It’s easy, buy a product that participates in the program (there are a lot -Ziploc bags; Kleenex tissues; Cheerios; Totinos pizza rolls) and remember to collect the box top before throwing out the packaging. You’ll know if a company participates because you’ll see a “Box Top$ for Education logo” on the packaging. Send your box tops collection into the school, and the school gets $. Pretty simple way to help out our students! Here is a form.

Good News! Our Labels for Education program was able to buy our school balls, jump ropes, recess equipment, hand buzzers for use in classroom interactions and 5 dozen sets of watercolor trays. Labels can still be submitted through August of this year, so please keep clipping them!

We are partnering with our Audubon and the Friends of Sligo Creek, for their annual Spring Sweep the Creekevent to help keep our area beautiful. We will meet at Glen Haven Park at 9am and work our way back to the school. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Let’s help pick up the area around our school and have fun celebrating Earth Day.

As winter turns to spring, animals wake up, return home, and build nests. And we can help them by protecting and preserving natural resources. Come and explore different animal habitats—from way up in the treetops to deep underground. Live animal presentations are included!

On the second Friday of the month, Dr. Ennis invites parents into the school to meet and then head into the classrooms to read to their child’s class (or another class that could use a reader).
