Good News – The Clothing Drive Deadline has been extended through Sept. 13! Clean out your closets and help support our school!  The PTA, Ms. Caruso and Ms Fox are jointly hosting a fundraiser, collecting clothing and small household items for the Unique Thrift Store in Wheaton.  Bring your stuff to the school by September 13 – drop off in Ms. Fox’s room.  The Unique Thrift Store will then donate $ back to the PTA, based on the weight of the clothing and items donated!

We need help loading up the truck with our clothing donations!  If you (or someone you know) will be home on Wednesday afternoon between 12 and 3, we would appreciate your help (and your MUSCLES!)  Email me at gaylejhope@gmail.com or text 703-489-1131.

  • County Department of Environmental Protection is conducting a survey to help them develop resources to help residents save energy and access clean energy.  Here’s a short survey that they would like people to take by Sept 30th.  Fill out the survey and you can win a sustainability kit! Take the survey now!
  • Celebrate International PARK(ing) Day in Wheaton! The Wheaton Urban District, MCDEP, MCDOT and GreenWheaton will be transforming parking spaces on Reedie and Grandview on Sept. 16 (Friday).  Stop by from 9:30 to 3:30 and enjoy a ‘mini’ County Fair.  They’ll have free ice cream from 11-2 (or until it runs out).  Click here for more info.
  • Have you noticed that there’s Outdoor Seating at Veterans Park by Wheaton Metro? Join Councilmembers Leventhal & Navaro on Sept. 20 at 5:30 to enjoy the new seating.  There will be FREE Ice cream!

  • All MCPS volunteers must complete a child abuse and neglect trainingHead here to complete the training, which takes about a half an hour.  Alternatively, Glen Haven is opening up the computer lab to volunteers who want to complete the training there.  Check out the schedule here.
  • As you may have read, Gov. Hogan has issued an executive order, requiring that MD schools start after Labor Day and end by June 15.  Head here to learn more.  Michael Durso, the president of MoCo’s Board of Education posted a blog about the order, stating that decisions around school calendars should remain local.  Head here to read his blog.

Reflex Math: We are excited to support third grade teachers Ms. Caruso and Ms. Fox as they fundraise to bring Reflex Math to the school. What is Reflex Math? It’s a computer game that helps kids improve their math facts. You can help two ways – do either or both!

* Donate $ to the Cause: Head over to their Donors Choose page (it’s like GoFundMe for teachers) and make a donation.
* Donate Clothing to the Cause: Clean out your closets and help bring Reflex Math to our school at the same time! Glen Haven Scoop: Week of May 9, 2016

Thank you to our excellent Staff Appreciation Committee for all their hard work last week! I know the teachers had a great time! If you haven’t seen any of the pics – head to our Facebook page! Peace, Love, and Books! The book fair is coming back to Glen Haven and we need parent volunteers to help run the store. Here’s a link to the sign up genius.

If you haven’t heard…. AlphaBest will be taking over before and after care at Glen Haven. For more information, head here. Registration opens May 12.

At our most recent PTA meeting, we learned about a new math program called Reflex, which is supposed to increase math fact fluency. You can learn more here: https://www.reflexmath.com/ The program costs about $3,000, and the teachers have asked for our help in funding it.

The Wheaton Library interim site is set to open May 19 at 9 a.m. at the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad Grand Ballroom. The site will be open Mon-Thursday 9-9; Friday/Saturday 10-6; Sunday 1-5.

Glen Haven Scoop: Week of May 1, 2016

A BIG HUGE thank you to everyone who donated time and backed goods for our first Bake Sale last Tuesday. We raised $1,000 for our school! Very exciting news. Keep an eye out for next year – we will definitely be taking advantage of hungry voters in the Fall!

It’s TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK! Let’s show our teachers that we appreciate them. (Please note students are not required to bring gifts)

¿Está recolectando Box Tops? ¿Sabe lo que es un Box top? Glen Haven participa en el programa de Box Tops for Education – que proporciona a la Asociación de padres y maestros donaciones por cada tope de las cajitas de productos de comida y otros bienes para la casa. Es fácil – compra un producto que participa en el programa (incluye por ejemplo, bolsas Ziploc, papel Kleenex, pizza Totino, etc.) y recuerda recolectar la tapa de la caja del producto. Entrega las tapas al colegio. Fácil manera de ayudar a los estudiantes.

Buenas noticias! El programa Etiquetas para Educación logró comprar pelotas y otro equipo para el colegio. Las Etiquetas se puede entregar hasta Agosto, así que siga recolectando!
