Fundraiser for childhood cancer: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Mrs. Pykosh’s School Energy and Recycling Team is asking students and parents to collect your spare change and send it in for the Coins4Kids program (https://www.coins4kids) benefitting the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (http://www.cncfhope.org/).

Announcements:
First Day of School- School begins on Tuesday, September 4, 2018!

 School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).  Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am.  Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.

First Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting: Please join us Thursday September 6 for our first Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting of the year! FREE pizza will be served at 6:30pm.  The meeting will begin at 7:00pm.  Alphabest will provide free childcare for school age children. Spanish translation available.

–         For your future planning: Parent Information Sessions/PTA Meetings convene on the first Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

–         Save the dates! Oct 2, Nov 8 (Thurs), Dec 4, (no mtg in Jan), Feb 5, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7, Jun 4

Glen Haven Weekly Scoop: Week of Nov. 28

Learn more about bullying and the PBIS program at Glen Haven during our Dec. 6 PTA meeting!  The Glen Haven PTA is excited to have Mr. Mike Muempfer speak to the Glen Haven community!  Mr. Meumpfer is a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) specialist for MCCPS, and will be speaking to us about both bullying and the PBIS program. Plan to come at 6:30 to enjoy pizza and social time with other parents and staff.  Babysitting for school aged children will be available at 7pm.

  • MCPS Superintendent Jack R. Smith sent a message to the MCPS community about inclusiveness. If you haven’t already seen it, head here.
  • MCPS launched a new digital citizenship education program through a partnership with Common Sense Education. It will start with middle school, and expand to other grades over the next three years. Learn more here.
  • Downtown Silver Spring will be hosting its Thanksgiving Parade on Saturday at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the giant turkey!  Learn more here and here.

  • MCPS Superintendent Smith submitted the FY2018 Capital Budget and Amendments to the FY2017-2022 Capital Improvements Program.  Here’s the press release.
  • Not sure what to do with leftover candy? Donate it! This year, Glen Haven ES will be participating in the Mattie’s Miracle Annual Candy Drive. The candy helps to fill a free snack cart for families caring for a child with cancer or other life threatening illness at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, John’s Hopkins Children’s Center, Children’s National Medical Center, The Children’s Inn at NIH, The Hospital for Sick Children, and several local Ronald McDonald Houses in the area.! Collection boxes will be by the main office from Oct. 31 – Nov. 4.
  • The County Council will be hosting a Town Hall meeting at Sligo Middle School on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30.

  • The County will be hosting flu clinics at JFK High School, Richard Montgomery High School and Seneca Valley High School on Nov. 7. The vaccine will be free to children 18 and under.  Learn more here.
  • Early voting starts on Thursday! The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad is an early voting location this year. Early voting runs from Oct. 27 through Nov. 3. Polls are open from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m..

Here’s the Sign Up Genius for the Election Day Bake Sale!  Last year we made $1,000 for the PTA.  Please sign up to help raise money for our school!  We ask that bakers wrap each baked good individually in a plastic bag or saran wrap.  Not a baker? It would be great to have you sign up to help sell (kids are welcome).  We also always welcome cash donations

TONIGHT: Town Hall to discuss Bell Times starting at 7 p.m. at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring. If you are interested in having your inputting heard about bell time in MCPS, please make time to attend this meeting.

We are looking for another parent to help out as a delegate to the county.  Interested? What does the position do? You represent us at county-level (and potentially state-level) meetings.  The meetings take place in the evenings. Email president@ghespta.org

MISC/Community News

The county Board of Education will be applying for a waiver from the state Board of Education to start the school year before Labor Day. The school year would begin on Aug. 28 and end on June 14 if the waiver is approved.

Glen Haven parent Gina Ghertner will be leading a free nature walk in Spanish for families with young children (under 5) at Meadowside Nature Center on Oct. 20 from 10:30 through 11:30. Have questions? Email Gina at gghertner@yahoo.es.

MISC/Community News

  • Wheaton Interim library branch will temporarily suspend services at 6 p.m. on October 21 and resume on November 17 at 9 a.m. to allow for use of the building for early voting.
  • Do you have any overdue library books? From October 16 to Oct 30th, the MCPL will deduct $1 from your total for each food item donated through their “Food for Fines” program. The donations will go to the Manna Food Center.
  • Metro is asking for public feedback on four proposed changes to Metrorail’s hours of operation. Have an opinion? Take an online survey in English or Spanish; Email written comments to writtentestimony@wmata.com.; Provide in-person feedback to staff at various Metrorail stations or attend the Public Hearing/Open House (anytime between noon and 10:00 p.m.) on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Metro Headquarters, 600 5th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. The deadline for participating is Oct. 25.

T-SHIRT DEADLINE EXTENDED! The deadline for buying Glen Haven T-Shirts has been extended through Thursday (We will be selling at Academic Night!) Email me at gaylejhope@gmail.com for a form.

Send your child in with some pocket money next week for our Scholastic Book Fair!(Your child’s favorite time of year!)  We will be selling books during the day on Sept. 28 and 29 and then during Academic Night on the 29th.   • MDOT and MCDOT will be holding a Public Meeting on Sept. 28 to provide info and get public comment on the evaluation of alternatives for Bus Rapid Transit service between Wheaton and Rockville.  The meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 in the MoCo Executive Office Building.  Learn more here.
  • Looking for some cheap books? The Aspen Hill Library is renovating and needs to sell its stock. The sale starts at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. at 4407 Aspen Hill Road.
